I feel like a little kid.
Hi, Mom!
Well, obviously, this is my first post and my first foray into the blogoshere. Though I know my way around a computer, I don’t beans about blogs. So, any advice, especially technical advice would be appreciated.
I have some objectives in mind for this new venture….
- Help me try to figure out what the church could and should be. I know that that is a loaded issue and that there is no one way for it to look, but I am wondering about the values that form the foundation. Of course, I also have an interest in creative examples of how it fleshes out. When it comes to the church, many of us have some gripes about what is, so I am asking, what’s next.
- Help me figure out what avenues I should pursue. Many of you know that I have been wandering in nearly five years worth no-man’s land, much of the time unemployed. After twenty years of being a pastor and a growing discontent with churches, in general, I have been at odds to come up with a next step.
- Help some old friends and some new friends by giving them a venue where they can be honest and sort out some of their questions that may be similar to some of mine. I look forward to your contribution to the discussion.
- Help me maintain a degree of emotional and spiritual health by venting, ranting, thinking, and chewing over things.
So, I ask that we don’t try to outsmart ourselves by sounding pious or theologically astute, that we try to come up with something that gets on the solution side of any gripes we have, and that we remain gentlemenly or ladily (I know, not a word.) by not getting personal or ugly. You can email me or call me with any important personal comments.
So, let the adventure begin! God had this amazing dream called the church. It has gotten off track in a lot of ways, but we know that it will prevail. The head of the church has given us a lot of latitude in how to do it. Now, it is up to us to re-dream the dream.

Welcome to a whole new world Glen…hope to see you and Patty back at TLR soon!

Congratulations on being my very first comment!
We had some things that took us away last Sunday. This Sunday, we are headed to Decatur to visit some good friends. I’m not sure if we’ll have time to look up Aaron while we are there. I keep forgetting the Wednesday thing. Could you give me a heads up Monday or Tuesday?
Thanks for keeping us in mind!

Greetings, Glenn! You know, this way, even when you’re out of town we can carry on with the conversations!
Regarding your “objectives” and the title of your blog, I too have a “dream” about what the church might look like
As a matter of fact, you can check out the Dreaming video at YouTube or on The Living Room’s website!

This is my very first reading and answering of a blog. I don’t know if you would call it a dream or just my idea and expectation of what church should be. I do know I like to keep going back to scripture as to what church was. I do know that things, including the church, evolve. My biggest concern is that too much human opinion has always smitten the church and has resulted in some pretty messed up “theology” and history. We need to make sure our opinions are based on scripture and not our own dream but stay true to Christ’s dream for His Church. What does that look like in this culture? I’m not ready to give up electricty and go join the Ammish community, but there are some definite principles they have grasped to keep them rooted.

I use the term dream because I think if this thing called church works right that it is pretty “dreamy”,ie., good and accomplishing God’s good will. Of course church always has its underbelly in every age and expression because of the human, sinful element (us, in other words). Yet, I think that we can get at some of the obvious problems and do better.
One of the goals of what is being called the emerging church movement is to ferret out the erroneous culture influences and get us back to something pure and simple, truer to scripture, yet appropriate for our culture.
You have to give the Amish credit for modeling forgiveness and community.
Thanks for a great comment, sweetie!
