Dear Mr. President

It is has always popular to both pick on the president… and to defend him (and blame someone else) for the problems that beset America. Here is a pop singer belting out a poignant protest poised as a series of questions. I believe that her song mirrors the thoughts of about 50-75% of the American populace these days… at least to some degree. With record low approval ratings for the President… and Congress and with frustration over the war, gas prices, and a catalog of other issues, people sense a disconnect with their government. The president has been “staying the course” and the Democrats have been ineffective in proposing and implementing alternatives. The American people chose a government that they don’t like right now.

My biggest problem with President Bush is that he seems to be detached from the anguish and frustration of the populace. At least, he doesn’t do a good job convincing us that he understands. I believe that he is responsible to hear and to understand what people are thinking and then to let us know that he cares about those issues, as well, even if he disagrees. Pink is complaining that the President is aloof and I have to agree that he acts that way.

I find these lines curious:

Were you (are you) a lonely boy?
I can only imagine what the first lady would say?
You have come a long way… from whiskey and cocaine.

Pouty pop princess with a political agenda or passionate pursuit of answers to pertinent questions? (This commentary is brought to you by the letter “p.”)

Unfortunately, Mr. Bush has convinced us that he would never walk with us, so we will never know.

That’s my opinion. What’s yours?

Check out my friends post of the video and the discussion there.

  1. I’m not saying that I am in complete agreement with the President’s position on the war, because I’m not. But I do believe that President Bush is acting on principle. That He is making decisions that He believes are in the best interest of the country.

I also think that to some extent President Bush needs ” to be detached from the anguish and frustration of the populace.” We don’t want a president who is going to act on his emotions or in reaction to the emotions or mood of the masses. I agree with you that the president needs to more sensitive to the feeling of the people.

“It is has always popular to both pick on the president… and to defend him (and blame someone else) for the problems that beset America”

So true. I think I will have to do a post on that.

  2. Glenn,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I hope that the next president does a better job with these things.

  4. Aaron G.~ I hope that is the case, that the President is acting on principle.

    John~ I’ll amen that!
