Christian Radio…Argh!!!

I have great adventures when I drive my wife’s car when her radio dial is set to a local Christian radio station. For about twenty-five years, I listened to pretty much nothing but Christian radio and Christian music, but I branched out to all forms of music and radio a few years ago.

Today someone plugging a program was talking about how people are leaving the church in droves according to a recent Barna study and he equated it with “leaving the faith experientially.” I started fuming when I thought about the asinine arrogance of that statement which presumed that God’s working is confined to the institutional church, the people who left have it all wrong, and our greatest concern is to perpetuate the institutional church, rather than love (and listen to) people as Jesus did.

Also, I had flashbacks to a job interview I had that went nowhere, literally because I did not have a church name to put under my name on the organization’s stationary. The director who interviewed me let me know that a house church would not do. He also told me about a time that he “turned his back on the church.” It rubbed me the wrong way and I think it was very dishonoring to Christ since I have given my life to the church and love it more today than ever. He never bothered to ask what my thoughts really were, but that didn’t stop him from developing his opinion. It drive me nuts when the church gets exclusive and shuts out people while thinking they are being godly!

Then came a plug for a program that will help prepare you for your church worship service. It struck me funny that we need a pregame show for our weekly worship experience. It seemed like a show to prepare one for the next show.

Then came a plug for The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian movie. The morning show was giving away tickets for a 12:01AM showing on opening day. I suspect it will be a really good movie, but what amazes me is how the Christian marketing machine works. If something is branded Christian and marketed to churches through their pastors, they promote the heck out of it. If it is an important or virtuous movie or book that doesn’t fit the Christian marketing machine mold, it is ignored… or feared.

Then came a plug for the station itself. A lady said that her husband used to listen to other stations, but now he just listens to said station and quit listening to that other “garbage”. Give me a break!

I got all of this “information” in about fifteen minutes of listening. Christian radio is not the problem. It merely reflects the Christian subculture, which is a problem. Too often, the good news about Jesus is overshadowed with the bad news about his church unwittingly propagated by those who are too immersed in it to understand how people outside the club perceive them. The beauty of the kingdom is too often marred by the exclusive attitude of her subjects.

I wonder why (not really) people are leaving the church in droves and why people think that Christians come across as holier than thou, but most of all I wonder why Christians don’t seem to care or, at least, get a clue.

  1. Hey Glenn,

I haven’t commented in a long time, but I’ve been reading – for the most part :) .

I actually listen to Christian radio stations quite often, but mostly because I don’t particularly care for much music and it’s hard for me to find a good talk radio show. So I try to tune into one of the many Christian stations that have some sort of Preaching going on – although usually I find myself frustrated listening to that garbage.

Anyways, I often hear advertisements about people who listened to these stations and were saved and I wonder how much money is spent on these fluff stations and how many people actually are led to Christ because of it. I know when I was lost, I didn’t care to listen to Christian radio at all, but back then I had a good Talk Radio station to listen to :) .

I guess what I’m saying is, I think for the most part, people poor money into these stations so that THEY can have something to listen to… but there is a veil of “I’m helping get the word out to the lost”.

    Sorry for the randomness.

  2. poor = pour… typo? :)

  3. hey glenn, i stopped listening a long time ago and i haven’t missed it a bit! i hear God in all kinds of other music and i just couldn’t take all of the exclusive language and presumptions. i know some people really like it, but it was definitely not good for my soul!

  4. Oh, OK what I hate is how they (christian radio stations) are ALWAYS ALMOST out of money, but SOMEHOW God comes through for them. Seriously? Not to knock it, but twice a year it is the same sob story about how they only have two weeks of operating expenses left… and the same miracle, Hallelujah, we did it.

Anyhow. I guess which is the garbage depends on where you sit.

That’s not to say God didn’t speak to me in it a time or two, but I hear Him more in Linkin’ Park.

  5. Lew ~ You’re right Christian radio is for Christians. It’s a poor evangelistic tool.

Kathy ~ Obviously, it’s not good for my soul either, but I am still amazed at how damaging it can be.

Erin ~ Definitely, God is out there in life. He doesn’t need a Christian radio station, but, apparently, Christians do.

  6. But, Christian radio is so “encouraging and uplifting”. I know it is because they tell me every five minutes…

Here’s one the most inspirational lyrics I’ve heard lately:

    So let mercy come,
    And wash away…

    What I’ve Done.
    I’ll face myself,
To cross out what I’ve become.
    Erase myself,
And let go of what I’ve done.

But, you won’t hear this on “Christian radio”.

  7. Great post, Glenn. Thanks for sharing this “snapshot” with us. I have not been able to stomach local Christian radio for several years now, mainly because the mamby-pamby music/message doesn’t seem real to me.

  8. There you go Alan, those lyrics are exactly the kind of thing I’m talking about.

  9. Alan ~ I’m curious. Will you reveal the artist?

Jeff ~ No kidding. Are Christians afraid of reality?

Erin ~ I wonder is Alan is tricking us.

  10. It’s what the uninitiated hear that worries me. Thankfully not many of them listen to Christian radio. Well, the other thing is the fact that Christians are so oblivious to the exclusiveness and negativity of their message. It REALLY bugs me!

  11. That’s Linkin’ Park that Alan quoted, Glenn.

    I rest my case.

  12. Glenn,

    RUN AWAY!!! RUN, AWAY!!!

The further away I get from that kind of marketing, the more amazed I am at how odd it seems now.

  13. Yes, that was a Linkin Park lyric from the song “What I’ve Done”. Here’s another one that’s been helping me lately:

In my living room watching but I am not laughing
Cause when it gets tense I know what might happen

The world is cold the bold men take action
Have to react or get blown into fractions

Ten years old is something to see
Another kid my age drug under the jeep

Taken and bound and found later under the tree
I wonder if he thought the next one could be me

Do you see the soldiers that are out today
To brush the dust from bullet proof vests away

It’s ironic, at times like this you pray
But a bomb blew the mosque up yesterday

There’s bombs in the buses, bikes, roads
Inside your market, your shops, your clothes

My dad he’s got a lot of fear I know
But enough pride inside not to let that show

My brother had a book he would hold with pride
A little red cover with a broken spine

On the back, he hand wrote a quote inside
“When the rich wage war it’s the poor who die”

Meanwhile, the leader just talks away
Stuttering and mumbling for nightly news to replay

And the rest of the world watching at the end of the day
Both scared and angry like “what did he say?”

  14. OR this one that helped save my sanity when I left church, “Numb”:

I’m tired of being who you want me to be
    feeling so faithless
    lost under the surface
Don’t know what you’re expecting of me
    Put under the pressure
    Of walking in your shoes
Every step that I take is another mistake to you
And every second I waste is more than I can take…

  15. Kevin ~ “Odd” is a good adjective!

Everyone ~ Now that I have openly displayed my un-coolness, help me out. Recommend some good music with a good or provocative message. I know this is a very subjective thing, but I would like your ideas. If you want to see want I have found that I like so far, you can check the dreamer page on the blog or my facebook page.

  16. To quote Rob yet again, “We ruined the word Christian when we started using it as an adjective. The word is supposed to be a noun, but became and adjective”

Thus my mix CD I compiled can contain 38 Acres, Linkin Park, Metallica, David Crowder, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Shawn Mullins, and Chris Tomlin and I am totally cool with that.

I used to listen to Radio-U an online streaming “Christian Rock” station all the time. But hearing them say continually just repeat this sinners prayer and thats it life is good from then out, it just makes my stomach turn too much. Personally I hate the radio, unless its good old fashioned sports talk radio or news radio!

  17. My recommendations don’t really fit with your list, so you might not want to take my advice unless you’re feeling adventurous…anyhow, I’m going to list some of the more popular tracks, so you can be “relevant”, should you choose to check them out.

Not to be redundant, but I would recommend you check out some Linkin’ Park. (Numb, Somewhere I Belong, What I’ve Done, In the End, Breaking the Habit) I also like Foo Fighters (No Way Back, Best of You, DOA, Pretender) and if you like reggae, check out Matisyahu (King Without a Crown is awesome.)

  18. Jason & Erin ~ Thanks for trying to help me out. I will give your recommendations a try. I am somewhat familiar with some of the artists and I am always trying to branch out and expand my musical tastes when I visit itunes.

  19. Hello all,

My first comment here. I am a huge Linkin Fan – love the Lyrics.

I have been intrigued by Daughtry recently as well. What about these Lyrics?

“Open up the book you beat me with again.
Read it off one sentence at a time.
I’m tired of all the lines,
    Convictions and your lies.
What right do you have to point at me?

Well, I’m sitting alone thinking about it all over coffee.
And still crowdin’ my space are the things you still hold against me.
    You cannot save me.

Well, it’s not the time to breakdown.
It’s not the time to breakdown.
It’s not the time to break up this love,
    Keep it together now.
It’s not the time to break.

Read it all, no need for separating here.
You see what you want and try to justify.
    All your little lines,
    Convictions and your lies.

It’s not the time to break.”

  20. Justin ~ I will have to check that out. I enjoyed meeting you and Heather. I’ll get to work on some of the cohort stuff in the next few days. It has been kind of busy lately. Welcome to the blog. Feel free to comment whenever you like.
