Dream
So, why yet another blog? Answer: I was compelled to to do it. I put it off a long time thinking, “What’s the use?” until it sort of bubbled out.
I have a love/hate relationship with the church. I love its founder, but have some issues with some of his followers. Like someone said, “Jesus needs a better PR team”!
Historically, the church has screwed up again and again with things like the inquisitions, the crusades, and corruption. Today, the church is associated with abuse, sex scandals, and hate mongering. More subtly, we find churches catering to white middle class suburbanites and abandoning the inner cities, programs that help yuppies be better yuppies while neglecting the poor, and embracing of “family values” while neglecting social justice for the poor and powerless.
While true, what you just read is only one side of the story. The other story is about a church that inspired great art, charitable organizations, and is leading the way in giving disenfranchised people help and hope.
There is nothing wrong with God’s dream. We just screwed it up! Yet the glimpses of it when it was working right are very compelling. The head of the church has given us considerable latitude about how to do it. So, it is up to us to re-dream his dream in a way that is fresh, yet true to his intentions.
That is what I am trying to get at in this blog.
Along the way I am trying to find my place in that dream and invite others in on this amazing journey. So, come on in, the water is just fine. I seriously hope that your will add your voice and share your thoughts no matter what your relationship is with God and I hope and pray that somehow this all winds up being used by God and is a blessing to you.
